Aquaplaning is one of the most frightening driving experiences. Your tyres are your only defence. Here's what you need to know.

Aquaplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tyre and the road surface, causing the tyre to lose contact with the road completely. At this point, steering, braking and throttle inputs have almost no effect — the car is effectively floating on water.

Why Tyre Tread Depth Is Critical in Wet Weather

Tyre tread grooves are designed to channel water away from the contact patch. A new tyre with 8mm of tread can disperse approximately 30 litres of water per second. At 1.6mm (legal minimum), this capacity is dramatically reduced. Tests show stopping distances at 1.6mm are up to 44% longer than at 3mm in wet conditions.

How to React if You Aquaplane

  • Do not brake suddenly
  • Do not make sudden steering inputs
  • Ease off the accelerator gently
  • Hold the steering wheel straight
  • Wait for the tyres to regain contact — usually within seconds

Preventing Aquaplaning

  • Maintain tread depth above 3mm (ideally 4mm+)
  • Keep tyre pressures correct
  • Reduce speed in heavy rain
  • Avoid standing water where possible
  • Choose tyres with strong wet-weather performance ratings
