Baffled by the string of numbers on your tyre sidewall? Here's what every character means and why it matters when buying replacements.

A typical tyre size marking looks something like: 205/55 R16 91V. It looks confusing, but once you understand what each part means, buying the correct replacement tyre becomes straightforward.

Breaking Down 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205 = Section width in millimetres (tyre width)
  • 55 = Aspect ratio (sidewall height as % of width)
  • R = Radial construction
  • 16 = Rim diameter in inches
  • 91 = Load index (615kg per tyre at this rating)
  • V = Speed rating (up to 149mph / 240kmh)

Speed Ratings Explained

The speed rating letter indicates the maximum sustained speed the tyre is designed to handle. Common ratings for UK cars: T (118mph), H (130mph), V (149mph), W (168mph), Y (186mph). Never fit a tyre with a lower speed rating than the vehicle manufacturer specifies.

Where to Find Your Tyre Size

Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall of all four tyres. You can also find it on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb. Some vehicles have different sizes on front and rear axles (staggered fitment).
