A tyre blowout at speed is terrifying — but the right response can prevent a minor incident from becoming a serious accident.

A tyre blowout — sudden, complete loss of tyre pressure — is one of the most dangerous events that can happen while driving. At motorway speed, the instinctive reaction (brake hard and steer sharply) is exactly the wrong thing to do. Here's what you should do instead.

The Correct Response to a Blowout

  • Do NOT slam the brakes — this causes loss of control
  • Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands
  • Steer straight — resist the car's pull to one side
  • Ease off the accelerator gently
  • Let the car slow down naturally
  • Only brake very gently once below 30mph
  • Steer to the hard shoulder or a safe layby

After Stopping Safely

Once stopped, turn on hazard lights and apply the handbrake. If on a motorway, stay behind the barrier if possible and call for help. Do not attempt to change a tyre on a motorway hard shoulder — call the emergency services and a mobile tyre service.

Preventing Blowouts

  • Check tyre pressures monthly
  • Never drive on tyres below 1.6mm tread
  • Inspect tyres regularly for sidewall damage or bulges
  • Replace tyres over 5-6 years old even if tread looks fine
  • Avoid overloading your vehicle
