A cut or bulge on your tyre sidewall is never good news. Here's how to assess the damage and whether repair is an option.

The sidewall is the most structurally critical part of a tyre. Unlike the tread area — where punctures can often be repaired — sidewall damage is almost always a reason to replace the tyre entirely. Here's why.

Why Sidewall Repairs Are Dangerous

The sidewall flexes continuously as the tyre rotates, absorbing road impacts. The forces involved are enormous. A patch or plug applied to the sidewall cannot withstand this repeated flexing and is likely to fail — potentially causing a sudden blowout at speed.

Types of Sidewall Damage

  • Cuts: deep cuts exposing fabric cords require immediate replacement
  • Bubbles / bulges: internal structural failure — replace immediately
  • Scuffs and abrasions: surface-only damage may be cosmetic only, but needs inspection
  • Kerbing damage: often deeper than it looks — get it assessed by a professional

When Is Sidewall Damage an MOT Fail?

Any cut that exposes the ply or cord, any bulge, or any damage that affects the structure of the tyre will result in an MOT failure. Inspectors will also fail tyres showing significant sidewall crazing, cracking or deterioration.
