Don't wait for a blowout to know your tyres need replacing. Here are the seven warning signs every driver should know.

Most drivers only think about replacing their tyres when something goes wrong. But waiting for a blowout or MOT failure is dangerous and often more expensive than proactive replacement. Here are the seven key signs that your tyres need attention.

1. Tread Depth Below 3mm

The UK legal limit is 1.6mm, but safety begins to deteriorate significantly below 3mm — especially in wet conditions. Use the 20p test or a dedicated tread depth gauge to check regularly.

2. Cracking or Crazing on the Sidewall

Small cracks on the sidewall indicate the rubber is ageing and drying out. This is particularly common on cars that sit unused for long periods. Sidewall cracks are a serious safety risk and warrant immediate replacement.

3. Bulging or Blistering

A bulge in the tyre sidewall indicates internal structural failure — usually caused by pothole impact. A bulging tyre can fail suddenly at speed and must be replaced immediately.

4. Persistent Vibration While Driving

Some vibration is normal — but if it's new, getting worse, or accompanied by steering pull, it could indicate internal tyre damage or severe imbalance.

  • Tread below 3mm (legal limit 1.6mm)
  • Sidewall cracks or crazing
  • Bulges or blisters on sidewall
  • Persistent vibration while driving
  • Uneven tread wear
  • Visible objects embedded in tread
  • Tyre age over 5-6 years regardless of appearance
